VA Mental Health Service
The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System (VAAAHS) is a Dean's
Committee facility fully affiliated with the University
of Michigan Medical School. It is located approximately
one mile from the U-M Medical Center campus and provides acute
medical, surgical, and psychiatric care to eligible veterans
in southeastern Michigan and northwestern Ohio. All VAAAHS attending
physician staff hold faculty appointments in the U-M Medical
School. U-M medical students and housestaff rotate through
all clinical services in the hospital. VA-based investigators
conduct basic and clinical biomedical research relevant to
veterans' health care needs.
The VA Mental Health Service, has three overall missions:
-
to provide the highest quality psychiatric care to eligible veterans in the area;
-
to provide excellent educational experiences in psychiatry for U-M residents, medical students, fellows and other trainees;
-
to conduct first-rate basic and clinical psychiatric research relevant to the VA's patient population
Clinical research is conducted with patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and basic research is conducted by laboratory-based faculty. All of our academic activities are fully integrated with the U-M Department of Psychiatry.
