Addiction Research Center
The Addiction Research Center, the research and research training arm of the Substance Abuse Section, carries out clinical and basic research that probes the biological underpinnings of substance abuse and substance use disorder as well as the social and contextual factors that contribute to development, maintenance, and recovery. Ongoing research, involving more than 20 different NIH funded studies, focuses in five areas: developmental psychopathology and genetics; neuroimaging and neurophysiology; intervention (including treatment, early intervention, and prevention studies), health services research, and the relationship of sleep and sleep problems to the emergence and maintenance of substance use disorders. Given UMARC’s research emphasis, a focus upon alcohol and drug policy is not an institutional priority. However, the still marginalized nature of the substance abuse field, as well as the great public health costs associated with substance abuse and medical conditions related to and exacerbated by it (asthma, type II diabetes, heart disease, hypertension), provide strong motivation for individual faculty to become involved in policy issues.
