Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry's Substance Abuse Section. The Substance Abuse Section is one of the operating sections within the Department of Psychiatry. Robert A. Zucker, Ph.D., is Section Director. The Section includes a staff of nearly 20 addiction researchers working on a wide array of projects in six major areas :
1.) Developmental Psychopathology and Genetics
2.) Brain Function and Neurophysiology
3.) Treatment
4.) Health Services Research
5.) Prevention and Early Intervention
6.) Sleep, Sleep Problems, and Chronobiology and Substance Use Disorder
The Section’s clinical arm, University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services, is led by Executive Director Kirk J. Brower, M.D. who also oversees an ACGME accredited Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship program and an NIAAA funded multi-disciplinary research training program for pre-and postdoctoral candidates and medical doctors wishing to pursue research. The Section’s educational activities also include two international training programs supported by the Fogarty International Center.
