The Substance Abuse Program, is one of the operating programs within the Department of Psychiatry. Fredrick C. Blow, Ph.D., is Program Director. His long history with the Substance Abuse Program goes back more than 25 years.

The Program includes a staff of over 20 addiction researchers working on a wide array of projects in six major areas :

  • Developmental Psychopathology and Genetics
  • Brain Function and Neurophysiology
  • Treatment
  • Health Services Research
  • Prevention and Early Intervention
  • Sleep, Sleep Problems, and Chronobiology and Substance Use Disorder

The Program’s clinical arm, University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services, is led by Executive Director Kirk J. Brower, M.D. who also oversees an ACGME accredited Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship program and an NIAAA funded multi-disciplinary research training program for pre-and postdoctoral candidates and medical doctors wishing to pursue research. The Program’s educational activities also include two international training programs supported by the Fogarty International Center.
