Suicide Risk Management

Kelly Posner, Ph.D. and Cheryl King, Ph.D.

Does suicide have the same denotation to medical specialists? Dr. Kelly Posner and Dr. Cheryl King argue that a problem lies in the non-standardized method of labeling different levels of suicide. These labeling issues restrict proper identification and treatment of suicide. They discuss the importance of standardizing these labels because it has been proven to highly decrease the death rate of suicide. According to Dr. Posner and Dr. King, the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) is effective in asking patients the right questions and picking up on suicide risks. They explain that this scale can be used in reducing suicide rates and increasing intervention possibilities.
