The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System (VAAAHS) have joined programmatic forces to create a network of training programs, consisting of two consortial programs and one non-consortial program. The two joint consortial programs are Clinical Neuropsychology and Clinical Adult Psychology, with the nonconsortial Clinical Child Psychology Program. The overall Training Network is led by the Psychology Training Committee Chair, Henry (Gus) A. Buchtel, Ph.D.

The University of Michigan and VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System provide a rich interdisciplinary training environment with seminars, invited lectures, and opportunities for collaboration with faculty across disciplines and departments. According to the U.S. News and World Report, the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers have been named #1 in Michigan, and among the best in the nation in 12 adult specialties, for 2013-2014 and the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is among the best children’s hospitals in the country in pediatric specialties, and is the only hospital in Michigan ranked in all 10 specialties, for 2012-13. Residents in the Clinical Child Psychology specialty area and residents in the Clinical Neuropsychology specialty area complete their training over a two-year period. Residents in the Clinical Adult Psychology Program complete training after one year; residents at the University of Michigan in the Clinical Adult area have the option to extend their training in a second year, to enhance their research and advanced clinical training portfolio. For residents in the two-year programs, appointments are made initially for one year with a second year re-appointment being expected but at the discretion of the postdoctoral resident and the program. Satisfactory completion of the two-year postdoctoral residency generally requires a minimum of 22 months of active participation with final approval and certification of all postdoctoral trainees by the Network Training Committee. The UMHS and VAAAHS residencies differ slightly in stipend and other ancillary benefits on a yearly basis, with a stipend minimum of $45,900 for the first year and generous health benefits, and increases in stipends for the second year.

The University of Michigan programs in this training network are among the first in the nation to be fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association in Clinical Psychology. Two of the programs are accredited for specialty training (UM Clinical Child Psychology and UM Clinical Neuropsychology); the third is accredited for Clinical Adult Psychology.  The Clinical Adult Psychology and Neuropsychology UM/VA consortia are applicant programs for accreditation (site visits February 28-March 1, 2013).

The training philosophy of the programs within this network is a scientist-practitioner model. The institutional philosophy and values of all the programs in the network are focused on normative healthcare ethical values of beneficence, non-malfeasance, and social contract in a context of public service. The central goal and mission of the training network is to contribute to the development of competent clinical psychologists. To serve this overall goal, the training network welcomes applications from individuals who have graduated from clinical/counseling psychology programs. The programs select candidates whose academic and clinical preparation, supervisor recommendations, and perceived synergy with our programs are ideally suited. Thus, we hope to identify postdoctoral residents who demonstrate a readiness to learn. To that end, the training network provides the breadth and depth of experiences in assessment, treatment, consultation, and scholarly support of practice and research.

The deadline for applications for the 2014-2015 training year will be January 1, 2014. Submission of materials electronically via email (including letters of recommendation) is encouraged, but paper submissions are acceptable.
