Geriatric Psychiatry Research

Helen Kales, M.D.
Associate Professor of Psychiatry
Director, Geriatric Psychiatry Section

There is a strong program of later-life mental health research at the University of Michigan with a unique and potent concentration of researchers studying aging and mental health related issues.  Particular strength in the area of health services and outcomes is in linkage with the Mental Health Services Outcomes and Translation Section (MHSOT), of the Department of Psychiatry.  Research related to older adults includes foci on: later-life depression; neuropsychiatric symptoms of dementia; substance abuse; bipolar disorder; integration of medical and mental health care; care for the seriously mental ill population in nursing homes; and health policy.

Researchers are able to assist promising trainees in identifying and developing tailored research growth opportunities that compliment their interest levels and available effort.  Trainees are able to reap the benefits of access to national administrative and planned clinical databases to answer important questions of interest to mental health and aging under the mentorship of Geriatric Psychiatry and affiliated faculty.

The research faculty includes:  Kris Barry, Ph.D., Frederick Blow, Ph.D., Helen Kales, M.D., Amy Kilbourne, Ph.D., John McCarthy, Ph.D., MPH, Edward Post, M.D., Ph.D., Sara Wright, Ph.D., and Kara Zivin, Ph.D.
