Addiction Psychiatry Training Program

Why addiction psychiatry?

Substance use disorders -- including alcohol dependence, tobacco dependence, prescription drug dependence, and illicit drug dependence -- are responsible for more than one-half million deaths per year in the U.S., and are estimated to cost our nation $414 billion annually. After discounting tobacco dependence, at least 50% of individuals with serious mental illness will also have a co-occurring substance use disorder. Therefore, you will see patients with substance use disorders no matter how or where you practice psychiatry. Spending 1 year of your life doing a fellowship in addiction psychiatry will add to your medical knowledge, advance your treatment skills, and prepare you to manage patients across psychiatric subspecialties.

Why Michigan?

The University of Michigan is a leader in addiction psychiatry education, clinical care, and research. Our Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and has been since 1997. Graduates of our training program are qualified to take their Addiction Psychiatry Board Exam after passing their General Psychiatry Board Exams, and 9 in 10 pass. Our University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services is fully integrated into the Department of Psychiatry and its full complement of clinics, and occupies exceptional space in the recently completed Rachel Upjohn Building on the East Medical Campus in Ann Arbor. Our commitment to balancing educational needs with clinical service, and work responsibilities with personal lives, is exemplified by a no-call policy for addiction psychiatry fellows.

We look forward to talking with you about our program and how we can help you meet your professional goals in Addiction Psychiatry.
