Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Program

The University of Michigan Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Program offers an extensive array of services to referring clinicians for their patients in need of acute psychiatric hospitalization. A multidisciplinary team assessment of the child and interviews with the child’s family and school ensure a thorough evaluation of the crisis. The team that completes the assessment also develops a treatment plan with the patient and family for rapid intervention to stabilize the crisis. Our teams consist of:

  • A Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow or Resident, Master’s Level Social Worker, Education Specialist, Registered Nurse specializing in psychiatry, Occupational/Recreational Therapist, and a Dietician.
  • Additional team members can include a Pediatrician and Adolescent Medicine Specialist, Psychologist, Speech and Language Pathologist and consultants from all medical and surgical specialties at the University of Michigan.

With our average length of stay is seven days, the entire team will meet to review progress on a minimum of five of the days. The benefit of the multidisciplinary team approach is the rapid assessment and treatment of the child.

All Inclusive Care for Complicated Psychiatric Illness

Although the choices of treatment have improved, treating psychiatric illness in the young remains complicated. At the University of Michigan Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Program, medication is not the sole means of treatment. Individual and family psychotherapy, recreational therapy, occupational therapy, milieu therapy, educational interventions, nutrition and many other modalities are critical to successful treatment outcome. When medication is recommended as a part of the treatment plan, our experienced faculty will offer the safest and most effective options .
