Ambulatory - Stress, Anxiety and Personality

The Ambulatory - Stress, Anxiety and Personality Section teams with the Depression Section to form our Adult Ambulatory Program, providing a wide range of outpatient psychiatric services to adults from our medical center, region and throughout the state of Michigan.  The Section contains two subspecialty teams, one focusing on Anxiety Disorders and one focusing on Personality Disorders.  We also have specialists who address the particular needs of cancer patients through a PsychOncology program at the UMHS Cancer Center.  Our Meds Plus Clinic takes a novel team and group approach to helping patients with long term challenges manage their own mental health.

Treatment modalities range from advanced psychopharmacological treatments to the most time-honored psychotherapeutic ones.  We have specialists within the areas of cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), group psychotherapy, and long and short term psychodynamic psychotherapy.  Clinical services are provided by psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, clinical nurse specialists, and social workers.

We share faculty with the Depression Section to address the special needs of expectant and post-partum mothers on a Peri-natal specialty team.  We also share our faculty with community based primary care clinics, where faculty and trainees work together with primary care physicians to identify and treat psychiatric problems in those settings where they present most frequently, thus creating a more holistic treatment context that is more comfortable for many patients.

We are located within a wonderful building in east Ann Arbor, opened in 2006 – The Depression Center - Ambulatory Psychiatry Rachel Upjohn Building.  This facility also houses the University of Michigan Addiction Treatment Services and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, allowing us to provide comprehensive attention to the mental health needs of our community under one roof.
