Stress and Anxiety Disorders Program

Stress and Anxiety Disorders Program Team

The Anxiety Disorders Program has existed as a subspecialty clinic within the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry since 1978. Throughout its existence it has provided state-of-the-art clinical care for patients with anxiety disorders and maintained national prominence as a leading anxiety research center. Under the former leadership of George Curtis, M.D., Randolph Nesse, M.D. and Oliver Cameron, M.D., Ph.D., the program helped pioneer the integration of behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, and psychopharmacological treatments for the anxiety disorders and became an early leader in the scientific exploration of the neurobiology of fear and panic. The clinic has developed structured group treatment programs that have increased efficacy and efficiency of clinical care. The program is committed to providing state-of-the-art treatment for anxiety disorders and maintaining scientific leadership in the psychobiological study of these disorders.

Our clinical services are now delivered at two sites – the Anxiety Disorders Treatment Clinic, located within the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) – and the PTSD Clinical Team, located within the Veterans Administration Ann Arbor Health System (VAAAHS).

Our research team is large and growing.  We maintain close ties between our clinical and research endeavors, insuring that our clinical work is always fully informed by the latest scientific advances and that our scientific efforts are informed by in-depth clinical understanding of the disorders we seek to understand.  We do psychobiological and treatment studies of Anxiety Disorders, and also study the general psychobiology of trauma, stress and anxiety as we seek to fully understand interactions between cognitive, emotional, and somatic processes as they shape human behavior and contribute to psychiatric disorders.  The Research Group includes a Basic Science Laboratory and is closely aligned with a Neuroimaging Laboratory (PANLab).

Our UMHS facilities are located in the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry's Depression Center – Ambulatory Psychiatry Rachel Upjohn Building.  The research group is housed just above our clinics, helping to sustain the clinical-scientific exchange we consider so essential to top notch work in both arenas.  The building also contains a wide range of clinics treating the full range of psychiatric disorders in children and adults, the word’s first interdisciplinary Comprehensive Depression Center, as well as major research teams studying Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Addiction Disorders, Sleep and Chronobiology.
