  Gender Differences

Focus of learning will be on the importance of gender in the ways that mental illnesses are conceptualized, diagnosed and treated. Lectures and discussions will address the differences between sex and gender, the ways in which gender and age norms affect the diagnosis and treatment of depression, and the role of gender in development over the lifespan. The course will also cover important information about sex differences in both drug abuse and sleep.

  Trauma, Stress and Anxiety: Bringing Science into the Clinic

Cutting edge research in stress related disorders will be reviewed with focus on post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Special emphasis will be given on meaningfully translating new data to improve the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD. Other areas of interest covered include: animal models of severe stress, neuroimaging and neuroendocrine studies of PTSD, exciting translational research in stress related disorders, and comprehensive assessment and treatment strategies in PTSD. Last, expert faculty, including internationally recognized leaders in translational research and practice in stress related disorders, will discuss future clinical research directions.

At the conclusion of the conference, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the differences between the concepts of sex and gender, and gain perspective on the ways in which gender concepts change over time.
  • Describe some of the challenges presented by age and gender in depression screening and treatment.
  • Understand the role of sex differences in substance abuse, as well as sleep and depression.
  • Appreciate the role of gender in development over the lifespan.
  • Appreciate the exciting recent advances and future directions in translational research in severe stress related disorders such as post traumatic stress disorder.
  • Describe comprehensive assessment and exposure based psychological interventions in PTSD.
  • Describe systematic psychopharmacological strategies in treating symptoms of PTSD.

Target Audience

This course is directed to psychiatrists, primary care physicians, social workers, psychologists, nurse practitioners, internists, neurologists, and other health care professionals, interested in expanding their knowledge of psychiatric conditions. Our focus will be to address significant interactions and practical ways to intervene so that patients will receive superior clinical care.
