Understanding and Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Returning Military Veterans and Their Families
Objectives: Faculty from the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and the Michigan Army National Guard will discuss the experiences and mental health needs of returning military veterans and their families. Treatment interventions through the Welcome Back Veterans Program will be described, and opportunities for attendees to participate in Community of Care activities in their home locale will be discussed.
Who Should Attend: This course day is designed for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners and others who treat or wish to treat military veterans and their families. The focus will be on recognizing the need for services, reducing stigma and improving care for soldiers and their family members who have served their country.
At the conclusion of the conference, participants will be able to:
- Understand the experience of military veterans and their families during the soldier’s deployment and upon return home.
- Describe the prevalence of psychiatric conditions affecting recently demobilized veterans and their families.
- Discuss approaches to reducing stigma and engaging military veterans and their families in care.
- Identify how they can link with and participate in the Community of Care in their home setting.

Medical Updates for Mental Health Professionals: Cutting Edge Information to Practical Approaches
Objectives: Faculty from the University of Michigan Medical School will provide updates in several areas of medicine of particular interest to psychiatrists and other mental health providers. Presentations will cover cutting edge and new information as well as practical approaches to assist psychiatrists and others in behavioral health to provide the best care to medically ill patients. There will be ample time for audience members to present their own clinical dilemmas and ask questions.
Who Should Attend: This course is designed for psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurse practitioners and others who treat patients with psychiatric diseases and medical comorbidities. The focus will be on improving care to this difficult and often quite ill patient population.
At the conclusion of the conference, participants will be able to:
- Discuss links between Coronary Artery Disease and Depression, and understand the importance of screening for depression in patients with cardiovascular disease.
- Describe screening for and treatment of disorders of glucose metabolism seen in patients taking atypical antipsychotic agents.
- Understand the epidemiology of depression in patients with acne and psoriasis, discuss the relationship of depression and Accutane, become familiar with the up-to-date treatments for acne and psoriasis.
- Understand the wide variation in prognosis and treatment of the different types and stages of breast cancer, and anticipate some of the most common physical and psychological effects of cancer and its treatment.
- Understand the approach to treating patients with fibromyalgia and chronic pain.
